John Maguire
Chairman and Founder
Maguire Associates, Inc.

As an academic trained in the scientific method, Jack Maguire introduced market research to the field of admissions when he became the Dean of Admissions at Boston College in the early 1970’s.  Soon after he began his groundbreaking work in admissions marketing, he created (and named) the first enrollment management model for the recruitment and retention of students.  During his tenure at Boston College, he tripled the number of applications and transformed the quality and national character of the student body.  Since his founding of Maguire Associates in 1983, Jack has served hundreds of clients and contributed to the evolution of marketing in higher education.  He has authored numerous papers and served as a faculty member at institutes such as the Harvard Summer Institute and has been featured in MoneyThe Chronicle of Higher Education, and NPR’s “Talk of the Nation” and “Morning Edition.”  Jack also founded the Web-based market research company, DiscoverWhy, and is the principal author of a patent on innovative research technology and methods, which was approved by the U.S. Patent Office in 2000.  He has served as a trustee of United Cerebral Palsy Associations, The College Board, and four institutions of higher education in the U.S. and abroad. Jack co-authored with his Maguire Associates colleague, Larry Butler, a book on a “systems” approach to enrollment management entitled EM=C2: A New Formula for Enrollment Management.  He holds a Ph.D. in theoretical physics from Boston College and received a post-doctoral fellowship from Rice University.  His avocations include the history and culture of Nantucket, the theory and strategy/tactics of baseball; the elusive simple solution to Fermat’s Last Theorem, and Cosmic Evolution – from the Big Bang to networked consciousness.
